ALBANY, N.Y. -- With one day left until the public comment period on hydrofracking ends, those opposed to the controversial drilling method are hoping to send a last-minute message to lawmakers.
More than 12,000 comments from concerned New Yorkers were delivered to the Capitol Tuesday by several advocacy groups. This is in addition to the more than 18,000 that have already been filed with the DEC.
Opponents say fracking in the Marcellus Shale would threaten the water shed.
"We are hoping that the Governor and DEC gets the message loud and clear. New York should not be moving forward with hydrofracking at this time. We don't have enough information. We don’t have enough good things to like the proposals that were very flawed,” said Katherine Nadeau of Environmental Advocates of New York.
Hydrofracking supporters say the proposed regulations will protect the environment while bringing in millions of dollars to the area and hundreds of new jobs.
