EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- Trace the path of a bullet from a window to a cabinet, where it ricocheted and fragmented to send shards into the sink and through the TV screen at Martin Dollard's house

“They've now hit our house, damaged property and fortunately nobody was in the house or it could've been a lot worse. Someone could've been killed,” Dollard said.

For years, Dollard and his neighbors say they've complained to police about gunshots fired from a neighboring property. This misfire, discovered Sunday after a weekend vacation, hit too close for comfort.

Dollard said, “Right here at the kitchen table is where we sit and eat and if you draw a line from where the bullet came in, to the television on that wall, any day I would've been sitting there eating dinner or breakfast.”

Police say three men, one 17-years-old, are being investigated for having misfired an AR-15 while target practicing on a neighboring property.

“According to ENKON, who we checked with, as long as, you have to be 500 feet from another house, you can shoot on your property,” said East Greenbush Detective Sergeant Matthew Breig.

But the Dollards and their neighbors, who collectively entertain almost 20 kids in their backyard, say their safety should trump what's written in the books.

“They're not always in the house, they're on the road or in the back woods. They're roaming around here and for these bullets to be flying without being stopped, that's a real problem for us,” East Greenbush resident Frank Rooney said.

“I hope that we can get them to stop shooting. That's the goal in this whole thing. It's not safe anymore and police need to enforce it so that they'll stop shooting their guns,” said Dollard.

Police are still investigating the case and plan to talk to all involved parties to reach a resolution.
