SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Red Cross is assisting 13 people following a fire Friday morning at a house and an apartment building in Schenectady. The fire broke out before 5 a.m. on the 700 block of Union Street, forcing 12 adults and one child out of their homes.
Fire officials say two homes were connected, making it hard to knock down the flames. Even though it's mild outside, the cold still presented problems.
People living inside one of the apartments say the heavy smoke woke them up.
Fire officials say the fire could have started from a candle in a lower level apartment. One fighter was injured, when some debris hit her in the shoulder.
