CORNWALL, N.Y. -- Cornwall police and the FBI are wrapping up their investigation into what caused a massive fire at the Cornwall Industrial Park.
The fire that tore through the complex last month is one of the largest to ever hit Orange County, leaving at least $12 million worth of damage and several businesses in ruins.
About 150 firefighters from more than a dozen agencies spent days trying to calm the flames and clear out the thick smoke. The fire was so massive, the Federal Bureau of Investigations assisted in the investigation.
There was speculation at the time that the fire was suspicious, but police tell us based on their investigation, human error, not criminal activity, sparked the flames. Police say the fire seems to have started accidentally by people doing salvage work around the complex.
“There was some cutting being done on the roof and that may have contributed. The sparks from the cutting of steel may have contributed to the fire,” said Town of Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard.
The complex’s manager tells us insurance companies are still conducting their investigations. He says parts of the building still left standing have recently come crashing down and he has closed off the area for safety.
The areas most severely damaged by the flames have been fenced off as owners prepare for the long process of demolishing what’s left and rebuilding.
