GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- According to the latest census data, when it comes to income levels and the number of families relying on public assistance and food stamps, Gloversville tops the list.
The data collected between 2006 and 2010 comes as no surprise to officials and the agencies that help provide services in Gloversville. Officials said the lack of industry and jobs is to blame for the fact that about 24 percent of families and individuals live below the poverty line. While it will take time to reverse the trend, officials said it is something they are actively working on.
John Nasso, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Fulton and Montgomery Counties said, “Over 60 percent of people come to us for emergency assistance are from Gloversville and other parts of the county."
Mayor Dayton King said, “The number are what they are and again we all fall into that adverse economy. Job rate is down, unemployment is high. One of the things we are trying to go to battle that is trying to open up where we haven't seen business before."
The Mayor said jobs are coming through development projects, like a new Wal-Mart Super Center.
