SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Schenectady police have made an arrest in connection with a fire at a vacant apartment on Lansing Street.
Jessica Lupi, 20, is charged with second-degree arson and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Lupi is accused of setting fire to some clothing at a vacant apartment at the building where she lived. Police said she is charged with child endangerment because she left her children with improper supervision while she was in the other apartment.
Lupi's father is disputing the charges, saying the children were with him and that it's obvious someone broke in and set the fire since the glass was broken from the outside, but police said Lupi was seen leaving the apartment on Monday and that the children were left with improper supervision.
Jeffrey Lupi said, "Now nobody seen who was breaking all that glass, but they seen my daughter leaving and that she did this? She was in there earlier doing laundry. She had the laundry, some of it over there still, and they took it, put it on the floor and lit it on fire. First they had to break the windows to get in because the main door is locked with a padlock. You know, they can't get in the front. So they broke the windows and went in, whoever did this, and set the fire. Now why would my daughter break all the windows and go in? Does that make any sense at all when she can just go right in through the front door."
Lt. Mark M. McCracken said, "It appears that there was a domestic dispute at which time Miss Lupi entered a vacant apartment, lit fire to property belonging to her fiancé, her boyfriend and then fled leaving two children alone in the apartment. There was an adult in there, however he was in another room. He was asleep and he wasn't even aware that the children were being left there."
Lupi's bail is set at $50,000.
