PITTSFIELD, MASS. -- They unsuccessfully tried to pry open a sliding door to the snack bar. Somehow, instead, they climbed up to a second floor balcony, kicking in the press box door.

"Belts, socks, some hats," said Rich LeVardi, vice president, Pittsfield West Little League, all stolen from Pittsfield West Little League team.

"I wasn't that surprised," LeVardi said.

In all, 72 sets of hats, belts and socks stolen, worth $1000, league officials said. League officials made the discovery Tuesday morning. They're not sure from where the vandals came our how they got away. One potential clue is a pair of socks they found along a nearby trail way.

"It's just disappointing. You put a lot of work into this place and you try to raise money for the kids," said Jim Heath, safety officer, Pittsfield West Little League.

Beyond the break-in, the vandals found a steel drum and apparently set fire to it. They also broke bottles along a set of bleachers.

Our reporter found three bee bee bullets in the base of one busted bottle, a possible indication of how they were broken.

League officials aren't sure how they'll pay for repairs.

"The team sponsors are back, but a lot of people who had sponsored us in the past just don't have the money this year to do it," Heath said.

The city tells YNN, money to replace the press box door will come from the general maintenance budget, at an estimated cost of about $500. Cleaning up a site someone tried to break into last summer.

"It's just a little hideaway for these kids to hang around, which is fine, they can hang around and do what they want, but leave the field alone," LeVardi said.

So far, police have no leads, no suspects. If you know anything that could help them in their investigation, give Pittsfield Police a call at (413) 448-9700.
