ALBANY, N.Y. -- State Police confirm that the suspect allegedly involved in a fatal hit and run in Albany over the weekend had fled from troopers who were trying to pull him over for speeding before the accident.

State Police said a trooper was pursuing the car which was going 75 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-90, but the trooper ended the pursuit when the vehicle got off at Exit 6.

Shortly after, Rozell Whitehead, 53, was struck while crossing Henry Johnson Boulevard. The vehicle involved kept going. Whitehead was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center.

Albany police said they have identified the driver in the accident, but no charges have been filed yet.

"We're not releasing his name at this point because he has not been formally charged," said Albany Police Spokesman James Miller. "It's something that we obviously want to finish the reconstruction of the accident, do other interviews, piece this all together as well as talk to the DA's office to get the appropriate charges."

Miller said the suspect is cooperating with police and that officers also recovered his car.
