WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- Plans to demolish the former St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet and redevelop the site are moving forward. Some residents spoke out against the project at a city council meeting Thursday night.

Last month, Nigro companies presented a plan to rezone the property between 19th and 23rd streets from residential to commercial. That means the old St. Patrick's church, rectory and school would be replaced by two new buildings.

"This is a landmark and it has a very historic organ, it’s renowned for its music acoustic, its stained glass ...it's a landmark," said Watervliet resident Marion Fotache.

A row of nearby houses could also need to be demolished, however Nigro has not said exactly what they would build there.

St. Patrick's closed back in September as part of a consolidation move by the Diocese.
