WATERVLIET, N.Y. -- Tensions are high in Watervliet as the city and supporters of St. Patrick's continue to battle over the fate of the church.

Nigro Companies has proposed tearing down the church to create a commercial space. That would mean the old church, rectory and school would have to be demolished.

The group Citizens for St. Patrick's is working to save the church.

Church officials say the building needs to be torn down because of its condition, but others say that's not the case.

"Obviously the congregation wants to tear it down, but from my perspective, the congregation has always been most interested in getting enough money to pay off their mortgage. And I don’t think they truly care if the money comes from Nigro or if that money comes from some group that's prepared to reuse the property," said Rosemary Nichols.

Rosemary Nichols was a department head of the project, but was placed on administrative leave. She was also removed as advisor to the city's planning board.
