ALBANY, N.Y. -- A 19-year-old Delmar man arrested in connection with a fatal hit and run in Albany was arraigned on more charges in Albany County Court.
Ian Eckardt-Rigberg is accused of hitting Rozell Whitehead as he crossed Henry Johnson Boulevard back in February, then leaving the scene.
Eckardt-Rigberg is facing several charges, including second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an incident with reporting as a felony, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, all felonies, as well as other misdemeanors and traffic violations.
The indictment alleges that Eckardt-Rigberg was driving on I-90 in Albany on Feb. 25 and refused to stop when police tried to pull him over speeding. The pursuit was called off after police said he got off at Exit 5 and onto Henry Johnson Boulevard, where Whitehead was struck and killed while crossing the street.
Albany police said Eckardt-Rigberg didn't stop but later went to the Bethlehem Police Department where he falsely reported being involved in various property damage accidents in the Town of Bethlehem.
Additionally, Eckardt-Rigberg is accused of driving in violation of restrictions on his license at the time.
