ALBANY, N.Y. -- While some students wonder what to study in college, a few Albany High kids took an opportunity to test out the nanotech field. Fifteen students "graduated" from the year-long Nano High program Thursday.

They spent half days out of the books and in the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering lab.

Over the last five years, 90 students have graduated from the program.

While nanotech has exploded in popularity throughout the Capital Region, the college calls the course the first of its kind.

Albany Superintendent Raymond Colucciello said, "They get into the labs, they work along with scientists, engineers, opportunities that they never have in the classroom. This is the real world with cutting-edge things going on."

Albany High senior April Dawson said, "We got to make these little silicon dishes, and we got to mess with all these different gels. It was pretty cool."

Albany High sophomore Athena Muhammad said, "Before I didn't know what nano meant, and with this class I took away more knowledge about what's going on in the world and what people are working on currently."

Forty-five students are already signed up for next year's program.
