STEPHENTOWN, N.Y. -- The Rensselaer County sheriff said they're putting the puzzle together surrounding a deadly crash in Stephentown on Thursday.

Police said Brendan Hoffman, 20, was driving down Cranston Hilll Road with his passenger, Chris Baker, 24, when he crashed. The sheriff’s office believes Baker was ejected.

A witness called to report the accident but told first responders that Hoffman had gotten into another car and left before they arrived. The sheriff said it was not until Hoffman's father called several hours later to tell them about Baker that crews went back and found him.

Investigators are still working on reconstructing the accident and interviewing witnesses before charging anyone in the case.

"Based on that investigation, based on his past history, based on all these things, we will then determine what charges are appropriate. The charges can go from anywhere from leaving the scene of a fatal auto accident right up to vehicular manslaughter, to vehicular homicide," said Jack Mahar, Rensselaer County Sheriff.

Officials said they believe speed was a factor in the crash, but are still investigating the cause.
