RENSSELAER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Rensselaer County Legislature has passed a law that will allow liquor stores to open on holidays. Officials voted unanimously on the resolution Friday.

Under the new law, stores will be allowed to open for two hours on holidays. Previously, liquors stores were required by law to close on days like Christmas, July Fourth and Memorial Day.

Store owners say that hurt their business, since many people spend these days drinking alcohol during parties and other celebrations.

"So this will enable them in a tough economy to increase sales. Again, to compete with adjoining counties whose hours are more flexible," said Dennis Rosen, State Liquor Authority Chairman.

Schenectady County recently passed a similar resolution that allows stores to remain open longer.
