LANSINGBURGH, N.Y. -- The U.S. Postal Service will begin consolidating and closing dozens of mail processing plants as early as this week. A last minute effort by the American Postal Workers Union to stop the plan, failed on Friday.

There are 48 plants across the country that will be impacted by the consolidation over the next two months. The Lansingburgh Post Office in Troy was set to close, but will instead have reduced hours to maximize efficiency. The agency also said it's reducing the size of its workforce, offering buyouts and retirement packages to 21,000 postmasters, well as 45,000 mail handlers. A postal service spokesman said the agency lost more than $5 billion last year.
