As State Troopers continue to investigate the murder of Schuylerville resident Matt Furlani, friends mourn the loss of a man who they say was getting his life back on track. YNN's Matt Hunter has the latest.

SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. -- "No one was perfect, but Matt was a good friend,” Schuylerville resident Roy Cassell said. “I've known him for 16 years now and he was a good hearted person."

Like everyone else, friends say Matthew Furlani had his demons: Most notably, a past battle with heroin addiction.

On Sunday inside his Church Street apartment, police say the 28-year-old was shot and killed by Joey Paul, a former girlfriend he was giving a place to stay for a few days.

"Even though she was an ex-girlfriend, he was just trying to be a good guy and he got repaid in the wrong way," Cassell said.

According to the Saratoga County District Attorney's office, a neighbor called 911 Sunday morning to report hearing gunshots coming from inside the apartment. At around that same time, Cassell says he walked inside to find his childhood friend dead on the floor.

"I haven't been able to get the picture out of my head since," said Cassell, who lives in a separate apartment in the same building.

The 28-year-old Paul, who was allegedly still in the apartment when police arrived, was arrested and charged with second degree murder.

This was not the first incident between the one-time couple.

"I don't have the specifics on the prior domestic incidents, but law enforcement have been called for domestic incidents between these two in the past," said Lieutenant Robert Poisson with the New York State Police Troop G Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

On Monday afternoon, the popular eatery, Mac's Diner, owned by Furlani's father, was closed down.

The Schuylerville native had reportedly overcome his battle with addiction, repaired relationships with family and according to friends, was getting his life back on track before it was cut short Sunday morning.

"He was a good person,” Cassell said. “No matter what people say, I want people to know he was a good guy and a lot of us will miss him."

Paul remains in the Saratoga County Jail without bail. As of Monday afternoon, no future court date had been set.
