TROY, N.Y. -- Opening statements get underway today in the re-trial of Michael LoPorto.
The former Troy city councilman is accused of forging ballots in the 2009 Working Families Primary. He was originally tried with Rensselaer County Democratic Elections Commissioner Ed McDonough.
After six weeks of testimony, the jury was unable to reach a verdict, and the judge declared a mistrial.
This time around, Special Prosecutor Trey Smith is proposing to drop seven of the 29 counts of possession of a forged instrument.
