Griswald Heights residents are still waiting for their neighbor and hero to return home after she rescued a baby from a burning apartment building over the weekend. Our Erin Vannella reports.

TROY, N.Y. -- "I haven't heard much about her,” said neighbor Nyya Gonzales. "I know she suffered burns but hopefully she'll be ok. She has a son to be here for."

Griswald Heights residents can't get 29-year-old Shontal Gaymon off their mind, a young mother who early Sunday rescued a baby from a fire in apartment five.

"I think it was heroic”, said Gonzales. "I would've thanked her because she saved the baby."

"I'm just happy," said neighbor Shuleo Daniels. "I'm happy she did that. She's a good person so it doesn't surprise me she did something like that."

Police say the one-year-old had been left with a caretaker who was in a neighboring apartment when the fire started. The baby's parent arrived home to find the flames around 3 a.m. and called on Gaymon to help in number six. Police say she ran in found the baby in a playpen. The baby was treated for minor burns. Gaymon is still being treated for second and third degree burns.

"I think that is not something a lot of people would do and we all thank her for going in there and saving her," said neighbor AJ Gonzales. "Risking her life to save another's is very respectful and I hope she's ok."

It's tragedy for one family and heroism for another, both situations neighbors say deserve their help.

"They're trying to fundraise some money to give," said Nyya Gonzales. "They lost a lot. They definitely are probably going to need it. Losing everything is hard."

"I can be there for her whatever she needs," said Daniels. "I'm here. I'll do whatever I can for her."
