NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A prominent union is coming down on the Newburgh City Council. The Teamsters Union is standing with the Newburgh PBA, saying that city council members took a stance when they shouldn't have, following the Michael Lembhard shooting. The teamsters represent the officers involved in the March incident.

The union said, in a statement, "We cannot understand why certain members of the Newburgh City Council publicly blamed the police officers at a council meeting, without waiting for the results of the grand jury."

Lembhard was shot and killed after police said the man lunged at officers with a knife. On Tuesday, the officers were cleared of any potential wrongdoing, and a grand jury found their actions were justified.

Newburgh's Deputy Mayor said that perhaps some council members overstepped their boundaries at the meetings.

"You have to be very careful about what you say in a situation like this. If you're in litigation, you don't really get involved that much because than you make it worse," said Regina Angelo, (D) Newburgh Deputy Mayor.

The council is now considering to pursue another investigation into the shooting, which will be discussed at a meeting on Thursday night.
