FORT HUNTER, N.Y. -- The 2012 Canal Days kicks off Saturday at the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter. The 28th annual two day event brings families together to recognize the Erie Canal's importance to New York State history. However, organizers said this year is a little different than year's past.

After last year's Tropical Storm Irene, and the unearthing of the remains of Fort Hunter for its 300th anniversary, there is an archaeology theme at this year's Canal Days. Also, Schoharie Crossing's earlier eighteenth century history will share the focus this weekend with the canal's history.

"This was a sight of an old fort that was unearthed last year during the flooding. They've been digging it up, it's actually an archaeological site right now," explained Linda Horlbeck, town of Florida resident.

The 2012 Canal Days wraps up on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Both admission and parking are free.
