MINNEWASKA STATE PARK, N.Y. - "This is an active rescue scene right now. We're working on removing the subject from the crevice that he's trapped in right now," said Minnewaska State Park Preserve Manager Eric Humphrey.

Humphrey is part of the rescue team that assembles Saturday afternoon in Minnewaska State Park. Emergency personnel receive a 911 call saying a hiker lost his footing and fell about 40 feet. His condition is unknown. His location however resuce workers say is in a remote spot in the vast state park. They say a rope rescue is the only chance to reach the victim, a 31-year-old New York City resident.

"Minneswaska is slighty over 21,000 acres. It's surrounded by cliffs and crevices throughout the park here," said Humphrey.

Helicopters have to be brought in to also help with the rescue. Meanwhile, word is received at the staging area that the victim has suffered a head injury, but is alert and conscious.

According to friends the hiker was not alone. He was with his wife and two other hikers when the accident occurred lodging him between two rocks.

About four hours after the ordeal begins, good news is received. Rescue teams have safely freed the hiker from the rocks. The helicopter has picked him up. Paramedics will now determine the extent of his injuries.

"It's a lengthy process. A lot going into it. A lot of different gear, coordinating all the different manpower and resources that are here. Everything went smooth," said Humphrey.

The victim is to be taken to Westchester Medical Center. Apparently escaping serious injury.
He tells his wife before he departs that he's okay.
