BURTONSVILLE, N.Y. -- It was a celebration of the Schoharie River and the local community Saturday in Burtonsville. The second annual Schoharie River Day featured local artisans, musicians, vendors, and activities for kids, but this wasn't just an average fundraising event.

The Schoharie Creek and surrounding area is still recovering from the damage left by Hurricane Irene. Several houses which lined the creek were damaged or destroyed. Debris is still being found, and much of the natural environment in the area was washed away.

Organizers at the Schoharie River Center have done some cleanup and restoration, but said they, along with many volunteers, still have work to do.

"Flooding brought in areas of foot-thick layer of sand and silt that wasn't there before, so it doesn't drain the way it used to. So we have some trail work and cleanup work to do, but it's coming along," said Doug Fortman, Schoharie River Center.

The organization has planted several hundred trees in the area, and will spread large amounts of woodchips in order to continue to absorb the excess amounts of water in the land.
