SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Just days after the deadly shootings in Colorado, the Schenectady County Sheriff's Office holds its second gun buy back event. The program is being offered on a monthly basis at different locations throughout the county.
Officials hope that this initiative will offer families a chance to benefit from the safe removal and destruction of unwanted or illegal weapons. Gift cards ranging from $25 to $250 were offered to those who turned in guns. Sheriff Dominic Dagostino said events like this are key in making the county a safer place.
"This initiative, working in consort with other things that are already existing such as our state, local, and federal task force that's addressing gang issues and gun violence, as well as other initiatives that we're looking to put forward. All of these working in consort will at some point have an effect on the reduction of gun crimes in this community," said Dagostino.
At the first buy back event, officials said they collected a total of 28 guns.
