NORTHAMPTON, N.Y. -- An Amsterdam toddler is dead after drowning in the Great Sacadanga Lake.
Police say the four-year-old boy, along with other children, had been swimming in an unauthorized area at the Northampton Campground. Campground authorities were notified of the missing child around five Sunday evening. A volunteer found him a short time later in the water. Lifeguards immediately began CPR.
The boy was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"The State Police and the DEC are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances as to how the child got away from the caregiver and died. Also, we are waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of the death," said Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira.
The boy had been at the campground with his aunt and other family members.
