ALBANY, N.Y. -- Students within the Albany City School District are grabbing a rake and rolling up their sleeves.

The students are building a community garden on Catherine Street in Albany. Once completed, it will feature garden beds, a patio and some seating areas around a birdbath.

The children take part in a series of summer workshops through Vacant Lot Project and the Liberty Partnerships Program based out of SUNY Albany.

Organizers said this years theme is the environment.

"Connect them to the community on a different level. Actually bringing them out, getting them dirty and involved. It is sort of multi-layered. So we have students being exposed to things that may of not had contact before. Everything from putting together stone sidewalks to gardening," said Sidra Chaudhary, program director of Liberty Partnerships Program.

The program provides students with mentoring and tutoring to prepare them for college.
