NEW YORK STATE -- Governor Andrew Cuomo signed new legislation and announced reforms to better protect New Yorkers from sex offenders.

Three bills were signed into law Thursday. Cuomo say they will ensure offenders are more carefully tracked.

The first bill takes effect in 30 days and calls for updated photographs of high-risk sexual offenders in the registry every 90 days or if the offender’s appearance changes.

Also effective in 30 days, the Board of Parole must submit reports to the Office of Mental Health and the Office of the Attorney General to help make informed judgments about the risks posed by sexual offenders in communities.

And the third bill, effective immediately, calls for law enforcers to notify a professional conduct officer from the State Education Department’s Office of Professional Discipline if they're investigating a complaint of sexual misconduct against a licensed health care provider.

“This is an additional safe guard to make sure potential predators are monitored, perpetrators are brought to justice and victims get the protection they deserve, in total these changes will keep our community safer, and make sure sex offenders are treated fairly,” said Liz Glazer, Deputy Secretary for Public Safety.

Cuomo says these new laws should fix holes in the system and keep people on both sides of the law well informed.
