ULSTER COUNTY -- The workers who saved an Ulster County man trapped underneath his riding lawn mower have talked about the rescue.
Richard Bennett became trapped under the lawn mower around 7:00 pm on Wednesday, but no one heard his cries for help until 8:00 am the next day.
Two Ulster County highway and bridges workers, who happen to be friends of Bennett's, heard him when they started work on Thursday morning. Robert Walker, along with his partner Bob Mooers, ran to help Bennett. The two lifted the tractor off of him without a second thought.
"The thing that keeps going through my mind is after seven o'clock up there, it gets very quiet. and the cars stop driving by and I imagine at that point he was becoming more desperate. What he was thinking about in the middle of the night, laying there with no one going by or anything is just amazing to me. He was non-chalant when I got there, thats why I didnt realize he was there overnight because he was so non-chalant," said Mooers.
"You gotta deal with the situation. Because we work construction all the time, so you never know what's going to happen on a construction job. So you have to be ready for whatever," said Walker.
Walker also said they don't consider themselves heroes and said he's sure Bennett would have done the same thing for them.
