MALTA, N.Y. -- State Police are releasing more information about a fatal crash on I-87 in the Town of Malta. It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lane between exits 11 and 12.

Witnesses said a Suburban was speeding and tried to pass a tractor trailer on the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle went off the road, hit a highway sign, then continued up an embankment where it struck a tree. State Police said the Suburban was split into two pieces.

The driver, identified as Christopher Harvey, 27, of Malta, was pronounced dead at the scene.
