ALBANY, N.Y. -- Participants in a fundraiser for the Special Olympics went "Over the Edge" on Friday, after raising thousands of dollars for the organization.

Those who raised at least $1,000 each for the Special Olympics got the chance to rappel 18 stories down the side of the Hotel Albany on State Street. About 60 people participated in Friday's event, including Albany Police Chief Steven Krokoff.

“I'm not a heights person and this was a tremendous feat for me to be able to do. However, I think the importance of it is that the men and women who compete in the Special Olympics every year, it's quite a challenge for them. And if they can rise to the challenge, I can rise to the challenge,” Chief Krokoff said.

A donation table was also set up at Friday's event, as well as a raffle fundraiser.

More than 55,000 people in New York State compete in the Special Olympics.
