ULSTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The woman was a mother from New Jersey. She and her three daughters had just left their grandparents house in Poughkeepsie and were headed home when they were struck head-on by an oncoming car, killing the woman and leaving the children motherless.
It was an early morning tragedy on Route 9W in the Hamlet of Milton in the Town of Marlboro. The 911 calls came in just after 6 a.m. reporting the collision.
Police say the family was headed southbound in their Honda van en route to New Jersey when a driver traveling northbound in a Jeep crossed over the double yellow line and hit them head-on.
A 12-year-old girl in the van was flown to Westchester Hospital suffering from injuries to her lower extremities. The other two children in the van were eight-year-old twin girls. They were taken to St. Francis Hospital with minor injuries and are expected to be treated and released to their grandparents.
The driver of the Jeep, also injured in the collision, was also transported to St. Francis Hospital. Police say he is a Poughkeepsie resident and was headed home at the time of the accident.
It is unknown at this time whether speed played a role or if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing and police say charges are pending.
Police say the children’s’ father was headed to Westchester to be with the 12-year-old girl. All three children and the driver of the Jeep are expected to survive.
