SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A Schenectady man was sentenced Monday for the death his girlfriend's 20-month-old son, Asiah Maxam.

John Batease, 33, received 22 years in state prison for a guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter.

Police said Batease was home alone with the toddler on June 19, 2011, when he rushed to the neighbor's home saying the boy had fallen and wasn't breathing. An autopsy found that the cause of death was blunt force trauma and it was ruled a homicide.

Batease was originally charged with second-degree murder as well as first-degree manslaughter. He accepted the plea deal this past June.
