ALBANY, N.Y. -- New legislation to better protect residents from sex offenders goes into effect today.

Governor Cuomo signed the bills into law at the beginning of the month.

The first bill requires photographs of high-risk sexual offenders be updated every 90 days or if the offender’s appearance changes.

In the next bill, the Board of Parole must submit reports to the Office of Mental Health to help make informed judgments about the risks posed by sexual offenders.

Cuomo said these new laws should fix holes in the system and keep people on both sides of the law well informed.
