ALBANY, N.Y. -- Bars and homes near Clinton Avenue and 787 were evacuated for a short time Monday night after police officers discover a suspicious package.

Police received a call that a passport had been found in the park near the 787 - Clinton Avenue exit around 9 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered not only the passport, but also a backpack and a lit candle.

The items were found close by the Leo O'Bryan federal building, so a State Police bomb squad was called in to investigate. The backpack contained some personal items and a package, but nothing suspicious.

Pearl and Pine streets, as well as Clinton Avenue and the southbound 787 exit were also closed, but reopened once the backpack was determined to be safe.
