EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- Police have arrested a man they say sexually abused a 98-year-old woman. It happened at a nursing home in East Greenbush.

East Greenbush Police say Thursday afternoon, Wallace Wheeler, 68, of Castleton, visited the Evergreen Commons where a relative of his used to stay. That relative has since relocated.

Officers arrested Wheeler after they say he kissed a woman at the nursing home and grabbed her breast. Officials say the woman is physically helpless and suffers from dementia. They say staff members and visitors saw the incident and called police.

"Training of staff is key. In this case, it was the sharp eye of a staffer who noticed that Mr. Wheeler's visit was either prolonged or in appropriate to the circumstances. I think the staffer realized that the family member was no longer a resident there and became suspicious of his purpose in the facility," said East Greenbush Police Chief Christopher Levin.

Wheeler has been charged with sexual abuse and forcible touching.

An order of protection was also filed preventing him from visiting the facility and residents.
