SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady County Sheriff's Office holds the county's fourth gun buy back on Sunday. The event was held at Mr. Marc's Barber Shop on Albany Street. The main goal is to get unlicensed guns off the street.
The Sheriff's Office said it will hold gun buy backs on a monthly basis at different locations throughout Schenectady County. Gift cards are offered in exchange for the guns, ranging from $25 for a BB gun, to $250 for an assault weapon. The owner of Mr. Marc's Barber Shop said the program is a great resource for the area.
"One unlicensed gun off the streets is a life that can potentially be saved. You know, a lot of time, it's not always the targeted person that's effected by the gun. A lot of times it's an innocent bystander," said Marc Thompson, Mr. Marc's Barber Shop. "A lot of these guys have weapons, but they're not trained in them so a lot of times it's somebody innocent that has nothing to do with it who gets hurt."
To date, the Schenectady County Sheriff's gun buy back program has collected 24 handguns, 27 rifles, and 5 non-working guns.
