ALBANY, N.Y. -- A community comes out to help two local women who were diagnosed with leukemia within two weeks of each other earlier year. Debra Segal of Albany organized a bone marrow drive and fundraiser, in honor of her friends Maggie Delvalle and Jennifer Buttofucco.
Both women are fighting leukemia, and Sunday's event was a way to try to find them a bone marrow donor, and raise awareness of the importance of signing up for the bone marrow registry. It also raised money to help cover their medical bills.
"There's thousands and thousands of people that need matches, and we have millions of people on the registry, but we're finding every single day that we can't find matches for people," said Segal. "So, this is just to bring awareness to our community of how important this is."
