NEW YORK -- In an effort to bridge the gap between available jobs and a lack of skilled workers, the U.S. Labor Department is providing millions of dollars in grants to community colleges across New York State.

$14.6 million in grants is available for 26 community colleges, three colleges of technology, and one four-year college that specializes in online education. The money will be used to establish work training and education programs that will better prepare thousands of students in several fields including nanotechnology, biosciences and advanced manufacturing.

The colleges are expected to use the money to create new classes and certification programs, bring new technology into labs and increase the availability of internships.
