ALBANY, N.Y. -- It's the beginning of a new era for the Albany City School District. Dr. Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard begins her tenure as the school's new superintendent.

Wyngaard spent her first day visiting three schools, starting with Albany High. Before coming to Albany, Wyngaard was a senior administrator for New Jersey's Paterson Public Schools. She beat out more than two dozen other applicants in a nationwide search.

Wyngaard said she's looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

"I think we have in Albany a unique situation," she said. "With all of the university structure and the technology, we can easily bridge between the two, which is not easily done in many others places. So building that bridge with other senior leaders of the university campuses is a priority."

Wyngaard is also stopping at Philip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy and Arbor Hill Elementary School today.
