MALTA, N.Y. -- Route 9 is back open to traffic following a car crash in Saratoga County that killed two people and injured another. Police are still trying to figure what caused the crash in the first place.

It happened in the town of Malta just before 5 p.m. Thursday as the evening commute was underway.

State police say a Honda sedan and an SUV collided head on just north of East High Street on Route 9.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to pull the two bodies out of the sedan and the single driver in the SUV was taken to Albany Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

State police say the people killed are not from the area. They are waiting to contact family members before releasing the names of the victims.

The section of Route 9 was closed for several hours in both directions as emergency crews pick up debris scattered on the side of the road.
