Audit faults Empire State Plaza elevator repairs

Audit faults Empire State Plaza elevator repairs
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says some elevators at Empire State Plaza in Albany went unrepaired for at least five months and officials failed to charge the contractor more than $200,000 in damages for 32 maintenance deficiencies.

DiNapoli says in audits released Thursday that elevators weren't getting proper preventive maintenance inspections needed to ensure safety.

The comptroller's office says as of February, the state paid $49 million on 240 active maintenance contracts with 37 vendors valued at $114 million.

The Office of General Services, which operates the state complex, says it has brought in new senior management for plaza operations, re-assigned and added staff and will use a separate inspector to double check the Albany contractor's work.

Commissioner RoAnn Destito says the elevators are in safe working order.
