MONROE COUNTY -- The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says an arrest has been made in connection with the death of a College at Brockport student. Clayton Whittemore, 21, of New Hartford, was arrested at a Thruway rest stop in Dewitt near Syracuse early Saturday morning.
Whittemore was charged with second degree murder without bail after pleading not guilty at Sweden Town Court. His preliminary hearing is set for 1:00 p.m. on October 4.
Police say Whittemore is not a SUNY Brockport student, but was visiting the victim last night at the college. The two were dating, and her name is not yet been released. Police say the victim's mother called campus police, asking security to check on her. They also say she was beaten and suffered upper body trauma.
According to SUNY Brockport officials, they have grief counselors on-hand, and have spoken to many of the students about the incident.
"It's shock. At all levels. For faculty and staff it's obviously a very sad situation, but for students this may be the first time they've experienced anything like this, and I think a lot of people are just in shock right now. They can't believe what happened," said SUNY Brockport Chief Communications Officer David Mihalyov.
And a hotline number was also set up for parents who would like to get information. That number is (585) 734-3925.
