PORT JERVIS, N.Y. -- Brett Kanoff was arraigned Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge, accused of killing his 13-month-old son, Cameron. With his head down and a gray hoodie sweatshirt hiding his face, he left the Port Jervis City Court after charged with his son's murder. Kanoff is accused of smothering his the child with a blanket while he was inside a portable crib.
"This is a very tragic and unthinkable crime that was perpetrated against a young child, and it affected our entire community, so our thoughts and prayers are with Cameron Kanoff," said Port Jervis Police Chief William Worton.
On the morning of September 24th, police responded to a 911 call from Kanoff's Ball Street home. When officers arrives, police say a family member carried Cameron out of the house and handed the unresponsive child to EMS workers. CPR was performed on the child as he was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Kanoff's mother did not want to speak with YNN.
Neighbor George Ram was surprised to hear about charges the 22-year-old is now facing, describing Kanoff as a good guy.
"He'd help you out and basically he'd talk to you," said Ram.
Kanoff pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday. Port Jervis resident Lisa Emerick was at his arraignment. She's not related to him or a family-friend. She's a woman unable to have children of her own, who heard about the case, and wants to see the man accused of disregarding a precious gift.
"No remorse on him whatsoever. it's just sad," said Emerick.
Indictments against Kanoff are expected to be handed up Thursday. He is being held at the Orange County Jail without bail.
