COPAKE, N.Y. -- A level two sex offender was arrested after police said he sexually abused a 5-year-old who was visiting him. According to police, the abuse happened during August and September.
The discovery was made following an investigation by Child Protective Services and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. Police said Kevin Hawver Sr., 47, of Copake, was charged with sexual abuse, forcible touching, and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was taken to Columbia County Jail without bail, and will reappear in court at a later date. Police also said the child told his mother about the incident, and she knew Hawver was a sex offender, yet she allowed the victim to go back and visit.
The child's mother was also arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, and taken to jail on $3,500 bail. Her name is not being released in order to protect the identity of the victim.
