TROY, N.Y. -- The sixth annual Troy Chowder Festival and Competition took over the city's downtown on Sunday. Thousands came out to test the 21 different types of chowder, from 17 local restaurants. A secret panel of four local restaurant critics judged the competition.
The public was able to vote on their favorite. Some restaurants said the event is a chance to get creative, while others said it is their opportunity to fine-tune the always popular traditional recipes.
"We did a pear chowder, autumn pear chowder, it's got maple sausage, bacon, brown butter, based with pears, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, love," explained Ryan Huneau of the ingredients in his chowder from Treviso by Mallozzi's.
Their Autumn Pear Chowder took home the Judge's Choice Award, which makes Treviso by Mallozzi's Autumn Pear Chowder a three-time champion. The concoction from Jack's Oyster House won the People's Choice Award.
