TROY, N.Y. -- A community gathers in Rensselaer County on Sunday to remember emergency service workers who have died over the last year. A ceremony was held on the campus of HVCC in honor of county emergency workers.
Family members, as well as elected officials, recognized the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and others who have passed away in the last 12 months. County Executive Kathy Jimino said the event doesn't just honor professionals, but also pays tribute to volunteer workers.
"Typically there's more volunteers that we recognize from year to year, because there are more volunteers throughout the county than there are paid providers when it comes to public service. But, it's really both. We recognize how much time they've given, the sacrifice, and also the danger that they put themselves in to protect the lives and property of others," said Jimino.
The annual ceremony first began at the Schaghticoke Fair several years ago, but has since expanded.
