NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- It’s the Newburgh Police Department’s second day of the investigation into the shooting homicide of Justin Doctor, 23.

Newburgh Police Chief Michael Ferrara said, “We’ve been working on it continuously gathering information.”

The Newburgh resident was shot outside the Game Time Sports Cafe on Liberty Street early Sunday morning. Doctor was hit in the arm and chest and was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital where he later died.

But shortly after Doctor was taken to the hospital, shots were fired around the area. Police aren't sure if the two shootings are related, but say at this point, they aren't ruling anything out.

Ferrara said, “Anytime there’s weapons used or firearms used and shots fired in cases, we always think of a connection, especially when there’s a close proximity and time wise between the cases.”

Doctor's death marks the fifth homicide in Newburgh this year, heightening the department's concern with the amount of weapons on the streets.

Ferrara said, “That’s a major concern with us too is how many guns are out there on the street and we keep track of these cases and what’s going on with them.”

And it’s leading them to exhaust all possible avenues to see if any of them are related.

Ferrara said, “We don’t know until we get deep into the story and identify all the players and find out what their relationship is to all the other players.”

No arrests have been made in connection with Doctor's death and police haven't said if they've identified any suspects, but the chief says he's confident they'll get to the bottom of the shooting as information develops.
