AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Amsterdam residents raking the lawn got a surprise when a baby bear cub ran across their property and up a tree.

Police were on scene soon after the bear was spotted on Elmwood Street and Guy Park Avenue. They stressed that even though the bear is just a cub, it's still dangerous.

Amsterdam Police Department Sgt. Owen Fuhs said, “Well, it's a wild animal and no one knows where its mother is, so in my opinion, they should be concerned about safety. We are.”

If the bear does not leave the tree on its own, ENCON will return in the morning to move it.
