NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A 20-year-old man died while trying to save his sister from a house fire in the town of Newburgh. Police said the fire broke out around 10:00 a.m. on Friday on Rockwood Drive.
Officials said that when Robert Dodd Jr. realized there was a fire in the home, he tried to wake up his sister. She was able to get out, but Dodd was trapped. When officers arrived, they said there were flames that were 10 to 12 feet in the air, and they were pouring out of the living room. They said Dodd was found dead in his bedroom.
"Once they start going through the house, there might be some indicators as to why he might not have gotten out. Apparently there was at least one animal, maybe a couple other animals in the house as well. There was indications that the one girl was trying to get her dog out," said Michael Clancy, Town of Newburgh Police Chief.
The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
