SAUGERTIES, N.Y. -- If you were in Saugerties on Saturday, you might have been startled by all the zombies that took over the village. Hundreds of people turned out for the third annual Village Invasion.

The event is billed as a combination of a movie reenactment, pub crawl, and community celebration. It is also a charity event, with participants asked to donate to the food pantry, or a fund to rebuild a local playground. This year's theme was Humans versus Zombies, with participants required to select a side.

"I think what makes it unique is the fact that it's quaint little Saugerties, that's known for mostly events that are targeted towards an older demographic. So, it's really great that it takes part in this historic town that has such a great vibrant community," explained Neal Smoller, event sponsor.

Jaimee Moxham, event organizer, added, "Eventually with the cooperation from the village of Saugerties, who's been really good to us, we'd love to make it a film festival. Maybe branch out with the Orpheum, and make it something really popular. Horror is very, very up and coming, especially with "The Walking Dead" and "Dexter" and all these great television series."

Organizers said this event is the largest of its kind in the northeastern United States.
