STATEWIDE -- The Marcellus Shale is at the center of the debate over hydrofracking, and now a new report finds the natural gas field could be much bigger than originally thought. The report suggests that the government is underestimating the size of the natural gas reserve, which is the biggest in the country.

Another report found that, in addition to its size, the Marcellus is the cheapest place for energy companies to drill. That is because of its proximity to major markets and population in the region.

New York is still debating whether to legalize the controversial natural gas drilling process known as hydrofracking. Opponents said they're concerned about the health effects, while supporters argue that it would create much needed jobs for the state.
